A lot of pretty hacks make it.  A lot of mediocre looking people who are great at whatever it is they do don’t.  That is the difference between now and the 60’s.  A lot of those awesome musicians our parents loved were pretty fugly.  Janis Joplin was no looker.  Bob Dylan is a weird looking dude.  Now, in our constant consumer constant race for beauty culture the thing that has gone out the window is quality.  Why listen to good music when you can listen to music made by pretty people?  I’m not saying this goes for everyone, but it seems as though this is the rule now and not the exception.  Just saying.
